Medaille Goes Pink

This morning at about 8:30, members of the Medaille community gathered in the Sullivan Center and in front of the Main Building to take a bus downtown in order to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Buffalo. The group left at around 9:00 and arrived downtown with plenty of time before the 10:00 start. There were mobs of people from all different kind of organizations, schools, sports teams, and of course, families, ready to walk the 5k to in support of the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research, education, and other programs.

I don’t personally know anyone who has died from or fought against breast cancer, but I felt that it was a great cause, so I chose to participate. Walking in these kinds of events is an awesome way to show your support, help out, and get in some exercise as a bonus. The walk was very scenic and beautiful, and at the end, volunteers handed out Special K bars, apples, and water bottles to all those who came out. The weather was even cooperating (in Buffalo, who would have thought?) and it turned out to be the perfect day for a walk around Buffalo.

It would have been nice to see a little bit of a better turn out from students at Medaille. The women’s lacrosse team came out for the walk, but only a handful of other students volunteered their time. Sure, it’s an early morning, but it’s not that difficult to sacrafice a few hours of sleep that you can make up in the afternoon. (I know I took a nap as soon as we got back.) Hopefully next year there will be more support for a really good cause.
